Application deadline: October 3, 2022

The Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), a prestigious university and one of Europe’s most active and international scientific and technology institutes, is situated in Switzerland.

At its international campus near Lausanne, EPFL has more than 350 labs.

The EPFL-CDH Artist-in-Residence (AiR) Program “Enter the Hyper-Scientific,” launched by the EPFL College of Humanities (CDH), augmented by EPFL Pavilions, represents the CDH objective of encouraging transdisciplinary interactions and partnerships between artists and EPFL’s scientific community. For three-month residencies to realize new and visionary projects at the nexus of art, science, and cutting-edge technology, the program invites professional Swiss and foreign creative practitioners, both developing and established.

Call 2023
For its second edition, the program offers three paths:

Open Transdisciplinary invites worldwide artists and practitioners from all fields and media to submit proposals for projects that address the primary goal of the program, which is to explore the fluid boundaries between the humanities, sciences, and arts.

In partnership with the EPFL Center for Imaging, scientific imaging gives priority to artists who are knowledgeable with imaging techniques, computer graphics, digital workflows, and the visual arts in general. Project suggestions in the area of data visualization are also encouraged.

Environmental transformation invites visual artists (including performers) and designers to interact in creative ways with current themes relevant to climate transformation in conjunction with CLIMACT, the Center for Climate Impact and Action. Interspecies, Indigenous, and post-colonial experimental approaches, as well as discussions on the relationship between climate change and social justice, are all welcome.

Who do we want to reach?

Professional Swiss and foreign artists who are interested in utilizing scientific and technical interventions in their artistic undertakings, both developing and established, with clear potential or defined career prospects. We encourage submissions in a variety of genres, including experimental design and fashion, literary, critical, and speculative writing, as well as visual and media arts, film, digital, mixed media, and imaging, performing arts, and sound and experimental music.

What do we offer?

Travel expenses and lodging in Lausanne. It is preferred that applicants live in the city for the duration of the residency. The lodging, which is provided by the City of Lausanne, is situated in the recently opened housing cooperative La Meute, where numerous cultural practitioners and artists live. It provides access to a shared studio space that enables interaction with the vibrant local scene and culture of Lausanne.

Additionally, we provide a monthly salary, a production budget, curatorial guidance and oversight throughout the project’s lifetime, including the project’s final presentation.
