Seeking Assistant Professor of Painting in the Department of Visual Arts at University of Chicago

Application deadline: October 31, 2022

Position description

The Department of Visual Arts is accepting submissions from working artists who are knowledgeable about current painting concerns in order to fill the position of Assistant Professor on the faculty. The chosen applicant will work alongside other DOVA professors in developing curricula, academic advising of students in a range of media, and other committee work. They will be assigned as Assistant Professors on the tenure track. The post is anticipated to begin on July 1, 2023, or as soon as is practicable after that date.

The chosen applicant will work in a department where the faculty members have active careers with both national and international reach. In order to foster collaborative debates within the intellectual climate of the University, the department places a strong emphasis on interaction with work that goes beyond one’s own and participation in discussions with academics both within and outside of the visual arts.

All of the department’s professors deal with a variety of undergraduate and graduate students, from those who are entirely unprepared in our foundational courses to those who need advice on advanced projects involving many media. The topics covered in courses might range from more sophisticated intellectually and philosophically inclined issues to an introductory lesson with an emphasis on technique.

It is the responsibility of all university departments and institutes to hire faculty members with a variety of backgrounds and perspectives, to foster an inclusive community that values freedom of expression, and to welcome and support all of its members.
