Art Students League and NYC Parks invite artists across all media to apply by July 12 for a two-year public art fellowship featuring sculpture exhibitions in Riverside Park.
The Art Students League of New York has officially opened applications for its 2026 Works in Public Fellowship, a professional development program designed to help artists gain hands-on experience in public art creation and exhibition. The fellowship is presented in partnership with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and offers participants the opportunity to develop and install large-scale public artworks for display in Riverside Park.
Artists working in all media are encouraged to apply before the July 12, 2026 deadline.
The highly competitive fellowship provides selected artists with valuable practical experience in the materials, techniques, and production processes involved in creating public art. Participants receive a stipend as well as a scholarship covering a full-time class at the Art Students League for the duration of the program.
Two-Year Fellowship Focused on Public Sculpture
The Works in Public Fellowship is structured as a comprehensive two-year program that combines education, professional development, and real-world public art production.
During the first year, fellows participate in seminars exploring the history and contemporary practice of public sculpture. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including sculptural concepts, proposal development, presentation techniques, site analysis, fabrication methods, engineering considerations, and studio visits with practicing artists.
Throughout the year, participants work toward developing a proposal for a full-scale public artwork. The educational component also includes weekly seminars, guest lectures, critical reviews, recommended readings, assignments, consultations, and visits to public art sites and artists’ studios.
The second year focuses on bringing selected proposals to life through the fabrication process. Artists whose projects are chosen will oversee the creation of their works, culminating in installations at Riverside Park South and Riverside Park at 145th Street.
Completed artworks will be featured in a year-long public exhibition, providing artists with significant exposure and an opportunity to engage directly with New York City’s diverse audiences.
Fellowship Offers Professional Development Opportunities
According to the Art Students League, the fellowship is designed to equip emerging and established artists with the skills required to navigate the complexities of public art projects. From concept development and engineering considerations to fabrication and public presentation, the program provides a rare opportunity to experience every stage of the public art process.
Selected participants are required to commit to taking classes at the Art Students League throughout their fellowship period. Applications will be evaluated primarily on the strength of the applicant’s portfolio and the quality of the proposed artistic concept.
The open application process is currently underway and will remain available through July 12, 2026.
Eligibility and Application Process
Artists from all artistic disciplines and media are welcome to submit applications. The fellowship seeks creative individuals interested in exploring public art practices and developing projects suitable for large-scale outdoor exhibition.
Prospective applicants can find detailed information, including the Works in Public Prospectus and Frequently Asked Questions, through the Art Students League’s official website.
