Bad Taste: open call for artists and activists

Greenpeace UK invites UK-based artists and activists to Bad taste: a project to devise artworks, creative actions and interventions in places of public, political and corporate structural power with an application deadline of January 15, 2023.

Greenpeace’s Bad Taste initiative funds innovative ideas that address the role of the UK’s industrial food system in the climate problem. Artists and activists from the United Kingdom are encouraged to create artworks, creative acts, and interventions at sites of public, governmental, and corporate structural power.

Three projects will get funding of 10,000 GBP, a separate production budget, and a box of ash from the burned Amazon rainforest.

Recognizing that the industrial food system contains injustices, this initiative prioritizes the viewpoints of artists and activists who identify as Black, Indigenous, people of color, and/or working class. We accept persons who identify as disabled or neurodivergent and will help them gain access whenever possible.

The ash reflects the destruction and brutality that underpin industrial meat and dairy production. Climate-critical forests are being burned across Brazil to expand animal husbandry, displacing and ruining Indigenous Peoples’ lives.

Even if we stopped using fossil fuels today, without considerably cutting meat and dairy consumption, emissions from the global food system would make it difficult to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Greenpeace is advocating for a 70% reduction in industrial meat and dairy production in the UK by 2030. Stopping imports of all agricultural commodities like animal feed that are linked to the destruction of forests overseas; freeing up land to restore nature in the UK; a commitment to ensuring accessible, affordable, nutritious food that respects cultural and religious traditions; and adequate support for households on low incomes are all required for the transition away from industrial meat and dairy.

This project aims to encourage inventive change-making tactics by bringing art and activism together. Greenpeace has fully opened up its action design process for the first time.
