Serra/Seurat: Drawings at Guggenheim Bilbao

June 9–September 6, 2022

Curators: Lucía Agirre, curator, Museo Guggenheim Bilbao, and Judith Benhamou, independent curator and art writer.

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents Serra/Seurat: Drawings, an exhibition that brings together a selection of 22 drawings by late-nineteenth-century master Georges Seurat, which engage in dialogue with Richard Serra’s Ramble drawings, a great admirer of Seurat’s and without a doubt one of the most outstanding artists of our time. Despite the years between them, both artists are known for treating drawing as a means to an end, elevating it to new heights, imbuing it with inventive qualities, and applying it to other aspects of their work.

Georges Seurat’s drawings were highly regarded by artists of the time, including Maximilien Luce, Vincent van Gogh, and Paul Signac, who referred to them as “the most beautiful painter’s drawings in existence” in 1899, and later artists such as Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore, Bridget Riley, and Richard Serra.
