UIC seeks applications for the 2023–24 Douglas A. Garofalo Fellowship

Application deadline: February 1, 2023

The University of Illinois Chicago School of Architecture is now accepting applications for the 2023-24 Douglas A. Garofalo Fellowship. Application deadline is February 1, 2023.

The nine-month fellowship, named after architect and educator Doug Garofalo (1958-2011), allows emerging designers to teach design studio and seminar courses as well as conduct independent research, culminating in a public lecture at the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts and an exhibition or public conversation at the school.

Since its founding nearly a decade ago, the Garofalo Fellowship has made an essential contribution to the school’s culture through participants’ design and pedagogical agendas. Past fellows include Molly Hunker (SPORTS), Pier Paolo Tamburelli (baukuhSan Rocco), Sarah Blankenbaker, Francesco Marullo, Fosco Lucarelli (MicrocitiesSOCKS), Anne Dessing (Studio Anne Dessing), and Johannes Berry (SUGIBERRY).

The UIC School of Architecture is dedicated to architecture as a cultural practice and operates within Chicago’s only public research university. The school’s award-winning foreign staff, 40 percent of whom were born or educated outside of the United States, provides much of its vitality and unique viewpoint. The Garofalo Fellowship intends to provide an aspiring architect with the chance to teach and perform research within this generative environment at an early stage of practice, as Doug did.

Applicants should submit the following materials to the Garofalo Fellowship search committee via the application form on the school’s website:

—Curriculum vitae
—Proposal describing research to be conducted as the Garofalo Fellow (500–750 words)
—Statement describing teaching experience and approach (500–750 words)
—Portfolio of selected work (no more than ten pages)
—Names and contact information of three references

Applicants must apply as individuals; no group applications will be accepted. The successful candidate will be expected to be in residence in Chicago from mid-August 2023 through mid-May 2024. The fellowship is the equivalent of a full-time faculty position and receives a salary.
