The third edition of the Tbilisi Architecture Biennial TAB 2022’s new topic inquiry focuses on the concept of temporality in urban and social life. The concept of temporality is offered as an intersection of several conditional circumstances, using Georgia’s recent past as an example. The approach is centered on three primary categories: concurrent time, space, and built environment study. As a result, in the part on time, we want to talk about architecture in one of these categories and reflect on how it coexists with everyday life in terms of length rather than physical dimension.

Our goal is to examine the current conditional circumstances that are presenting themselves to us for a variety of reasons while avoiding conceptions of permanence and mental stability. Although architecture’s “present” attributes may not make it permanent, it must be researched separately/individually and translated to create a solid setting for the future.

For many years, we have been living in a temporary state in Georgia. When it comes to living spaces, restricted resources, political instability, wars, or means of income, we have been confronted with temporalities since childhood. Georgians, like people in many other post-socialist countries, describe their life as fleeting, like everything else in their country. We never know what tomorrow will bring or what the next thing will be to keep us going and surviving. What’s Next? is a broad inquiry that humans pose in response to a variety of temporal and spatial issues. On the one hand, temporary living space is connected with insecurity, a shaky foundation that could collapse at any time; on the other hand, it provides an important and fascinating setting to study and work on. By addressing the issue of temporality, we not only focus on the place that will soon vanish, but also bring into the conversation areas that were intended to be ephemeral but have grown permanent over time.
