PAMM presents exhibitions by Carlos Cruz-Diez and Christo

Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is pleased to announce that beginning May 30 through September 5, the museum will be open on Mondays from 11am–6pm. On these “Mellow Mondays” visitors are invited to quietly browse the galleries, reflect on PAMM’s waterfront terrace, and begin their week with a refreshing art-filled day.

The museum is also proud to continue its Thursdays at PAMM program throughout the summer. Every Thursday, the museum will remain open with extended hours until 9pm, featuring guided tours, art-making activities, and special events. From 5–8pm on Thursdays, guests are invited to enjoy happy hour and live music at the museum presented by Backroom Sessions.

For the first Thursday at PAMM this season, the museum will host Dawoud Bey in conversation with Franklin Sirmans, part of the ongoing Scholl Lecture Series. On June 2, at 7pm, PAMM Director Franklin Sirmans and renowned photographer Dawoud Bey will hold a conversation centering around Bey’s projects from 2012 to 2021. Bey is known for his work engaging with African American history and situating it in the contemporary conversation, making clear how the past continues to inform and shape the present. Two of Bey’s photographs, Wallace Simmons and Eric Allums, Birmingham, AL, and Cabin and Palm Trees were recently acquired by the museum through the generous support of the PAMM Fund for Black Art. 

Later this month, on the evening of June 9, the museum will present Carlos Cruz-Diez: Chromosaturation, an immersive installation by Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez. Acquired for PAMM’s collection in 2020 with funds provided by Jorge M. Pérez, Chromosaturation is an immersive environment that reimagines color as an embodied experience. Initially conceived in 1965, the installation consists of three connected chambers infused with intensely saturated red, green, and blue light. Upon entering this space, visitors are transported by a chromatic experience that shifts as one moves from one space to the next. The experience scrambles the retina, which is normally accustomed to perceiving a wide range of colors simultaneously. Eliciting both a strong sensorial and emotional response in viewers, the installation transitions from a visual experience into a bodily one, underscoring the notion of color as a material, physical phenomenon that unfolds continuously in time and space.

Visitors to the museum this summer can beat the heat while experiencing a variety of events or browsing PAMM’s galleries featuring the ongoing exhibitions Marisol and Warhol Take New York, Marco Brambilla: Heaven’s Gate, and Zhivago Duncan: Pretentious Crap, and upcoming exhibitions by artists Christo, Hélio Oiticica, and Mariano Rodríguez.
