Refocusing the Lens: from the Centre to the Margins
July 30 – August 3 2022
From July 30 to August 3, Magnum Photos will hold its first film festival in the UK at the Rio Cinema in East London.
With five film screenings and discussion panels that focus on morality, underrepresentation, and positionality behind the camera, the festival offers an examination of Magnum’s 75-year collection.
The program, which is being aired as part of the British Film Institute’s (BFI) “Film Feels Curious” nationwide film festival, examines the function of photojournalism and the desire to document world issues through the prism of curiosity, while also highlighting the voyeuristic, detached, and occasionally exploitative tendencies of the genre.
Four Magnum photographers are represented in the event, showcasing their work from four different regions: the US-based Khalik Allah, Sub-Saharan Africa’s Chris Steele-Perkins, Latin America’s Susan Meiselas, and the Mediterranean’s Patrick Zachmann. Each will be screened after pieces by a wide spectrum of local filmmakers, and a discussion with the audience will be facilitated by renowned speakers.
This event is part of Film Feels Curious, a UK-wide cinema season, supported by the National Lottery and BFI Film Audience Network. Explore all films and events at filmfeels.co.uk.
