Seeking Head of Computational Media and Arts at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Guangzhou

To achieve the greatest possible synergy in research and education, HKUST (GZ) has created 16 thrust areas and four transdisciplinary hubs. The Computational Media and Arts (CMA) Thrust Area is one of them. The CMA encourages the collaboration of media arts, technology, and research and makes use of the most cutting-edge tools for innovation with a social impact. With plans to eventually add taught postgraduate and undergraduate students, CMA, which currently has faculty and students from a variety of backgrounds, including media arts and computing, is actively seeking new faculty members. Within a few years, it is anticipated that CMA will have 200 research postgraduate students and 30 faculty members.

Expected Qualifications
To make CMA one of the top computational media and arts departments in the world, the incoming director will be provided crucial university resources. The Head of CMA will be a visionary, active, and open-minded academic who will report to the Dean of the Information Hub and be expected to give leadership and manage the department in its varied academic and administrative activities on the brand-new HKUST campus in China.

The successful candidate will have:

–A PhD degree preferably in a computational arts / digital arts / sonic arts / game arts / new media field or equivalent;
–Substantial experience in leadership positions in higher education / managing teams;
–Over ten years of teaching experience in higher education (including supervision of postgraduate students);
–Proven scholarly work or art practice in relevant fields, such as computational arts and new media, with: exhibitions in top venues / solo or group exhibitions; publications in journals / books / book chapters; peer-reviewed publications in conferences
–Professional/industrial experience preferred;
–Experience of institutional collaboration with museums and galleries will be an asset;
–High proficiency in English.

Terms & applications / nominations

The appointment as Head will typically be for an initial term of three years, extendable for an additional term, and concurrent with a professorial appointment. Outstanding new faculty members will be given enough money to set up their research in Guangzhou.

Well-qualified and talented academics are encouraged to apply or nominate themselves for the position. The successful candidate must have shown ability to deliver effective leadership at the tertiary level in addition to renowned academic credentials, considerable teaching and research experience. An advantage is having a track record of working well with the public sector, business, and industry.
