VENICE, Italy – The 60th Venice Biennale, curated by Adriano Pedrosa, has unveiled the list of 332 participating artists for its main exhibition, titled “Foreigners Everywhere.” The exhibition explores the experiences of living on the margins as an outsider or an émigré, addressing pressing global issues such as migration, decolonization, and identity.

Pedrosa, the first Latin American curator of the Biennale, emphasized the diverse geographic representation of the artists, with a focus on Indigenous artists and those from the Global South. This year’s edition surpasses the number of artists included in 2022, showcasing a wide range of perspectives and artistic practices.

Themes of migration and decolonization are central to the exhibition, reflecting the complexities of movement and existence across borders, nations, and territories. Pedrosa’s curatorial statement highlights the challenges and disparities faced by individuals based on ethnicity, nationality, race, gender, sexuality, and freedom.

The exhibition features works that address various conflicts and crises around the world, including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and the Israel-Hamas war. Pedrosa sees the Biennale as a platform for dialogue and understanding among countries, with 90 national pavilions participating alongside the main exhibition.

Claire Fontaine’s evolving neon sculpture series “Foreigners Everywhere” (2004-), which inspired the exhibition’s title, will be displayed in 53 different languages throughout the Arsenale. Pedrosa draws attention to the treatment of Indigenous artists as foreigners in their own countries, highlighting the participation of the Indigenous Brazilian collective MAHKU – Movimento dos Artistas Huni Kuin, who will create a monumental mural for the Central Pavilion.

The exhibition also features a section dedicated to queer artists and another showcasing three important European female outsider artists. Pedrosa, who identifies as queer, emphasizes the importance of representing marginalized and historically persecuted artists in the Biennale.

The “Contemporary Nucleus” section draws inspiration from Marco Scortini’s “Disobedience Archive,” exploring themes of Diaspora activism and gender disobedience through films, videos, and works created between 1975 and 2023.

The exhibition’s “Historical Nucleus” highlights modernist movements from Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East that remain largely unknown. Pedrosa stresses the need to learn from these movements and their contributions to art history.

The second part of the “Historical Nucleus” focuses on the activities of artists belonging to Italy’s first or second generation Diaspora, presented in glass easel displays inspired by the work of Italian-born Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi.
