Künstlerhaus Büchsenhausen invites applications from visual and media artists, art critics, theorists, and curators for fellowships in 2023-24. (October 9, 2023–June 21, 2024). The deadline for entries is January 29, 2022.
Büchsenhausen supports internationally important artistic production, study, and discussion in the Tyrol region through its Fellowship Program for Art and Theory. The program is centered on the concept of creating and sustaining a production and debate space in which artists and theorists can connect and reflect on international art and societal discourses in connection to local subjects and challenges. At the same time, it allows for an artistic laboratory of experimentation, where new artistic practices and strategies can be tested.
Following an open call for applications, a jury of experts selects the Fellows. They come to Büchsenhausen for a minimum of five months to work on developing their suggested project, which is accompanied by public activities. Büchsenhausen provides a monetary award as well as a production budget, a budget to facilitate exchange with other experts and partially cover the fellows’ own travel costs, free access to the working space and available technical facilities, free lodging, and artistic and technical advice for this purpose.
Parallel to the development of the different initiatives, the fellows’ own work is conveyed and discussed. The emphases of the various fellows’ works influence the focus of the public activities. The fellows or their guests can present various points in their research, open up their works-in-progress to critical discussion, interact with specialists they invite, work through content with the public, and/or test out new ways of working within the framework of these discursive formats.
The fellowship year begins in early October with Orientation Weeks. The Orientation Weeks conclude with the Start Up Lectures and the fellows’ opening of the autumn/fall exhibition. During the Focus Weeks in January and March/April, the fellows and/or their guests publicly discuss issues related to their ongoing work, engage in intense exchanges with their program colleagues, and participate in cooperation activities with other university and non-university partners and institutions. The fellowship year concludes with a group show organized by the fellowship program’s creative director.
