De Ateliers is accepting candidates for the next working season, which begins in January 2024.
De Ateliers is an artists’ institute for artists just starting out in their careers. It is a twenty-month studio and tutoring program geared to the demands of highly motivated artists who want to build their artistic foundation, develop their ideas, and deepen their practice in a concentrated, critical atmosphere with peers from all over the world.
The curriculum revolves around weekly individual studio conversations with regular and guest instructors, the majority of whom are working artists. The goal is to improve one’s understanding of one’s artistic standpoint and process by providing a variety of perspectives and critical comments.
The De Ateliers programme’s individual and intensive nature, with weekly one-on-one studio visits by teachers on Tuesdays, necessitates a highly driven and devoted mindset. The considerable time and space provided by the De Ateliers programme can result in a life-changing experience for artists who are actively seeking regular critical feedback and who have an open attitude toward a diverse spectrum of artistic voices and ideas.
De Ateliers is a small-scale institution that houses twenty spacious studios in a majestic studio building in the heart of Amsterdam. It provides access to basic workshop facilities, a library, public activities, and linkages to key art and information organizations in Amsterdam and beyond, in addition to individual studio spaces. Participants at De Ateliers have access to shared housing and stipends to cover basic living expenses to facilitate and support their stay in Amsterdam.
Although there is no legal age limit for applications, we have found that the majority of candidates are under the age of 28. English proficiency is necessary. It is not necessary to have a thorough art education. All applications are reviewed by De Ateliers’ artist tutor team and evaluated based on factors such as potential for development, artistic urgency, and an interest in the visual/material/formal possibilities of studio art practice.
The deadline to apply for the working period 2024–25 (January 1, 2024–August 31, 2025) is March 1, 2023, 11:59pm CET. The selection procedure takes approximately four months. Applicants are informed on the status of their application by email.
