Tribute to Doreen Adengo from the African Futures Institute

July 28–September 23, 2022

The first annual Alero Olympio Memorial lecture, delivered by renowned Nigerian architect Mariam Kamara in honor of the Ghanaian architect Alero Olympio, who passed away from cancer in 2005, marked the beginning of the AFI’s first public events program in August of last year. The bright, motivated, and passionate architect from Kampala, Uganda, Doreen Adengo, who tragically passed away on July 23, 2022 after a protracted struggle with cancer, was scheduled to participate as part of this year’s lineup of speakers from Africa and the Diaspora.

In 2015, Doreen established Adengo Architecture, a research-driven, multidisciplinary firm based in her native Kampala, Uganda. She received her undergraduate degree from Catholic University and her master degree from Yale University. She is a licensed architect in both the United States and Uganda. In addition to the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Johannesburg and Uganda Martyrs University, she also taught at The New School and Pratt Institute in New York. She left a lasting impression on her coworkers, students, and colleagues all throughout the world over her illustrious career, and they grieve her loss.

This season of AFI talks is being presented as a tribute to Doreen and the enormous joy, creativity, and hope that her work has left behind for both our continent and the rest of the world. Each of our presentations will open with a tribute to Doreen, giving the speakers and audience a chance to consider the significance of this woman to our profession as a whole.
