John Murchie: À rebours
January 21–April 23, 2023

Emily Falvey and Felicity Tayler are the curators. John Murchie’s art investigates the link between order and chance. He seeks chaos in restraint and humour in seriousness by focusing on simple tasks such as drawing a line, applying paint, or picking colors. Straight lines become crooked, layers of paint placed evenly develop bizarre shapes, and crossword puzzles expose modernist abstractions. rebours (Against the Grain) spans Murchie’s artistic career, which began in the 1970s when he was Director of the Library at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.

This exhibition explores how embodied experiences are generated through sensory interactions by bringing together online works of interactive, non-linear storytelling. You are drawn deeper into webs of lyrical hypertext, interactive storytelling, and games with each click, keyboard, swipe, or choice. There is no winning or losing, and there are innumerable conceivable outcomes. These works generate personal, intimate dialogues in which we contact, touch, and communicate with code in order to re-examine and enhance our understanding of both the digital and physical worlds.

Room for One
October 20, 2022–April 16, 2023
Elizabeth Cann, Alex Colville, Rhoda Colville, Christian McKiel, Andrea Mortson, Mary Pratt. Curator: Emily Falvey.

The Covid-19 outbreak brought to light the persistent disparities of invisible labor, which includes caring and household duties. Room for One delves into this topic through a selection of artwork that focuses on relationships between artists, their friends and families, and domestic life in general. It investigates modeling as an active form of creative expression, as well as the numerous forms of unpaid emotional, creative, and household labor that both enable and obstruct the creation of works of art.
