Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève presents Biennale de l’Image en Mouvement 2023 artists

Geneva – The Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève has announced the artists that have been chosen to participate in the forthcoming Biennale de l’Image en Mouvement (BIM’23), in November 2023.

The Centre d'Art Contemporain Genève has announced the artists that have been chosen to participate in the forthcoming Biennale de l'Image en Mouvement (BIM'23), in November 2023.

BIM’23 will invite spectators to take a close look at the world of invisible, operational moving pictures that are redefining visual culture—and us. Many artists have gradually turned their attention to the algorithm as both a permanent presence and a driving force in contemporary life during the last ten years. From large-scale AI, neural networks, and machine learning (ML) to the low-level hum of everyday phone surveillance in our pockets, we’re enslaved to ever newer and more dazzling ways that algorithms identify, sort, and classify.

As predictive algorithms learn, they generate a large number of unseen images that take on their own life. These photos are required for the algorithmic procedure to work. They actively build our reality once they are harnessed by ML and AI. They use our private stories to create the world. These images, as many have theorized, are operational; they are fuel and material, and they may generate their own context. These images, unseen and unperceived, are a visual blank that haunts the sight. How will we live in the future in regard to these visuals designed for machines only?

The existence of this invisible, in-process picture world serves as the starting point for the artists of BIM’23. Refusing. They may propose new methods of seeing the unseen by employing “tools” such as simulation technologies, machine learning models, gaming engines, basic handcrafted computers, statistical speculative research, and others. They give us strategies for refusing spectacular digital futures, developing technocratic forms of creation, and the gospel of the inventive and new. They are critical, poetic, and anchored in historical, cultural, and social studies.

The invited artists will collaborate closely with the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève to create new works. These will be made available to the public in November 2023 as part of an exhibition that will include immersive installations, film screenings, built environments, and virtual projects.

Curators Nora N. Khan and Andrea Bellini have chosen the following artists: Basel Abbas & Ruanne Abou-Rahme, Alfatih, American Artist, Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley, Sheila Chukwulozie, Formafantasma, Aziz Hazara, Interspecifics, Lawrence Lek, Shuang Li, Diego Marcon, Lauren Lee McCarthy, Sahej Rahal, Jenna Sutela, and Emmanuel Van der Auwera.
