The new professor co-advises additional courses in the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs, including master’s theses, and provides core courses for students in the first and second semesters of the Bachelor’s degree program. Students are given a fundamental understanding of social conditions, the effects of the built and natural environments, modern sociological techniques to study on housing and cities, and an overview of world events by her or him. The new professor will oversee doctoral students, direct his or her teaching and research team, and work in conjunction with chairs at the Institute of Landscape and Urban Studies as well as the Department of Architecture and across ETH on projects involving teaching (including design studios) and research. A cutting-edge research program in the fields of sociology and urban studies is required of successful candidates. The Network City and Landscape (NSL) and the Future Cities Laboratory are closely related to the research activities (FCL).
The chosen candidates will be leaders in critical sociological and urban studies debates who are well-known internationally. She or he must possess strong theoretical and empirical sociological competence at the various dimensions of spatial processes. A doctorate and exceptional experience in academic research and teaching are also required requirements (Bachelor and Master). One should expect responsible group leadership and a dedication to actively promoting the growth of the Department of Architecture outside of one’s own area of specialization. German or English should be used as the language of instruction.
