Application deadline: October 1, 2022

PhDArts provides visual artists and designers with a worldwide, high-level doctorate in creative study. PhDArts is a collaboration between Leiden University’s Academy of Creative and Performing Arts (ACPA) and the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague.

The PhDArts research path comprises of two components: individual research supervision and participation in the doctoral studies program. Seminars, trainings, lectures, and workshops led by PhDArts staff and guest speakers are part of the doctoral program, as are presentations of individual research projects by fellow doctoral candidates. Students are expected to participate in this program since it is an important aspect of the research environment in which they conduct their research.

Artistic research

Research is undertaken within or through creative practice in artistic research, and it is extensively discussed in a discursively written text.
The research issue relates to the possibility of producing an innovative aesthetic and discursive contribution to knowledge. The research’s findings add to an aesthetic understanding of the world, to the developing body of creative academic discourse, and to societal significance.

Admission

Applicants must have a Master’s degree or proof of equivalent study. Because the PhDArts is a practice-as-research degree, applicants must first show that they are highly proficient practitioners in one or more aspects of the visual arts and/or design. On a theoretical level, applicants must show that their ideas are well-formed and that they can situate their contribution within the context of a certain field of study. The candidate must be able to demonstrate that the research project is urgent.

There are two stages to the application process. The first part entails the evaluation of a research dossier that is submitted via our website’s online application form. If the Advisory Group gives the applicant a favourable recommendation, the candidate advances to the second phase of the application process and is asked to take the Entrance Examination in December 2022. The Entrance Exams are held at Leiden’s Academy of Creative and Performing Arts. Leiden University, which will also confer the PhD, has the final say on admittance. For further information on the entrance requirements, the admission method, and the online application form, please visit our website.
