June 18–September 25, 2022

Ruangrupa and the Artistic Team, in collaboration with lumbung members, lumbung artists, and their invited participants, will activate Kassel, Germany, for 100 days during documenta fifteen, from June 18 to September 25, 2022.

The essential principles and ideas of lumbung, the Indonesian name for a communal rice barn, are at the heart of documenta fifteen. Lumbung is a tangible technique whose ideas of collectivity, resource creation, and equitable distribution have an affect on documenta fifteen’s entire process.

Documenta fifteen isn’t a static, curated show that stays the same for the entire 100 days. Instead, its 32 locations are ever-changing gathering places where people may meet, talk, and learn. Exhibition spaces are transformed into living rooms, and the artists collaborate to choose how each location will be used. The grounding of artistic activity in ordinary life is made tangible through this approach. Through the practice of lumbung, documenta fifteen aims to examine different approaches to economy, collectivity, and sustainability.

lumbung Program: Opening Week, artists’ events and Meydan

During documenta fifteen, artists arrange workshops, demonstrations, listening sessions, conversations, readings, and film screenings under the lumbung program, which takes place around the city, both within and outside the exhibition locations.

The Opening Week program, the artists’ events throughout the runtime, and the three-part weekend format Meydan are all part of the lumbung program. Numerous programs are aimed to documenta fifteen’s visitors, with whom they are exchanged and developed further, thanks to collaborative network design that allow knowledge and other resources to be shared.

The Opening Week, which runs from Saturday, June 18 through Saturday, June 25, 2022, is jam-packed with activities put on by lumbung members and artists, and kicks off with an evening of live music and parties on Saturday, June 18. In conjunction with Kassel ekosistem, these events take place at the same time, producing a network of dispersed opening celebrations across the city.

Various events produced by the artists stimulate the city and venues of documenta fifteen during the exhibition’s 100 days. Exhibition halls are transformed into gathering places, living rooms, and spaces for conversation and repose.

During documenta fifteen, Meydan takes place every second weekend of the month: July 8–10, August 12–14, and September 9–11, 2022. In Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and Urdu, the word meydan refers to a public gathering place, such as a square or a public park. It’s a convenient location for gatherings to talk, disagree, or rejoice. Meydan consists of several social gatherings and is a collaboration with Kassel ekosistem, with each edition concentrating on a different region of Kassel.
