Northeast Philadelphia’s Recycling Center for Construction and Demolition is where RAIR, a non-profit arts group, is located. Artists can use the studio space and recycled materials on-site through RAIR’s residency program. A sizable project area, woodworking tools, metalworking equipment, access to the waste stream for materials, and a material storage facility are all included in the RAIR workplace. The RAIR staff provides attentive assistance to artists while they are in residence and serves as a liaison between the artist and the recycling facility. RAIR’s Residency Program offers artists the chance to use the entire three and a half-acre facility as an expansive project space for the development and presentation of ambitious experimental work, in addition to giving them on-site access to reclaimed materials, construction tools, and a fully-equipped studio space.
RAIR is thrilled to provide a 1000 USD stipend to artists-in-residence in 2023. Outside-the-city candidates are qualified for housing and travel assistance. The executive director of the Fabric Workshop and Museum, Christina Vassallo, the director and co-founder of Monumnet Lab, Paul M. Farber, and the artist Jean Shin will serve as the jurors for this year’s open call. They will choose the artists-in-residence for 2023 and give those artists virtual studio visits so that they can receive valuable peer criticism.
Applications for 2023 residencies opened on September 9, 2022 and will close on October 31, 2022 at 11:59pm. Applicants will be notified early next year.
