June 25–October 10, 2022
Residents and guests are cordially invited to take part in this year’s PASSAGES INSOLITES public art circuit and events by EXMURO arts publics and the Ville de Québec. The historic districts of Place Royale, Petit Champlain, and the Old Port will host 17 pieces by 18 local, Canadian, and international artists around a 2.5 kilometre circuit from June 25 to October 10, 2022.
PASSAGES INSOLITES has carved out a distinctive position in the urban environment and the hearts of Quebec City inhabitants over its nine years of existence. The event this year establishes venues for cross-artistic dialogue and geopolitical, environmental, and colonial inquiry. In the words of Vincent Roy, EXMURO’s executive and artistic director, this year’s spectacular, provocative programming will “help put Quebec City on the global art map as a venue for exhibiting art and promoting artists, both locally and internationally.”
Ai Weiwei, the event’s headliner in 2022, and PONY, the first-ever PASSAGES INSOLITES ambassador, both stand in for the event’s objective.
World-class programming
Ai Weiwei, a renowned artist, gives the North American debut of a significant new piece at PASSAGES INSOLITES. Don’t pass up this exceptional chance to have a close experience with one of the most important living modern artists. Ai Weiwei is hailed for his politically active, subversive practice that questions conventional wisdom and criticizes economic, political, and social power disparities. He is a revered cultural icon and devoted humanitarian activist.
PONY: PASSAGES INSOLITES’ first ambassador
Long-time PASSAGES INSOLITES favourite Gabrielle Laïla Tittley, known as PONY (Poor One Newly Young), is a multidisciplinary artist with a trademark playful sensibility. The secret to her success? Inclusive, accessible art that brings people together, pushes for positive change, and promotes mental health. For Tittley, who comes from a humble background, accessible art projects like PASSAGES INSOLITES are crucial, especially when they “give space to diverse voices outside the dominant discourses that have monopolized the conversation for too long.”
Complete program of artists: Nicole Banowetz, An Adaptive Moment (2021 and 2022); Collectif Bélanger-Sacy, An Uprising of Sorts (2022); Tracey-Mae Chambers, Hope and Healing Canada (2022); Eva Clouard, Forbidden Games (2022); Gaspard Combes, Namas Pamus (2022); Julia Duranleau and Marie-Pier Lachance, Our Reality, Augmented! The Museum of Bad Art: Boston’s eccentric Museum of Bad Art will come back in 2022 with a crazier assortment of wonderfully dubious artworks. From June 25 through October 10, 2022, visit the Maison Hazeur in Place Royale at 27 Rue Notre Dame.
Guided tours: From early July to late August, take advantage of professionally guided full or partial tours of the circuit for 15 or 10 USD per person.
Interested in more? For our very first podcast, “Soif d’insolites,” PONY takes the lead (available on Spotify). Gabrielle Lala Tittley dives into the histories of the works of art and the creators of them in a collection of brief tales. Additionally, she will use an original illustration made for the official event T-shirt, which will be sold at the information desk at 27 Rue Notre Dame beginning on June 25, 2022, to immortalize the 9th annual PASSAGES INSOLITES.
