ArtScience Museum presents Patricia Piccinini: We Are Connected

August 5, 2022–January 29, 2023

Australian-born Patricia Piccinini, who was born in 1965, investigates what it means to be human in a society where biotechnology and genetic engineering are becoming more prevalent. Through her creations, she challenges us to think about how technology is altering our relationship with nature and to address the moral dilemmas raised by our capacity to conceive life.

An exhibition called Patricia Piccinini: We are Connected takes viewers on a fascinating and emotional journey through an astonishing realm of gorgeously odd hybrids and strange new creatures. With his hyperrealistic sculptures, mechanized animals, mutant humans, and other strange and unsettling creatures, Piccinini celebrates a diverse and fascinating universe.

At the nexus of art, science, and technology, Piccinini explores the intersections of science fiction, the surreal, feminism, and environmentalism. She encourages us to think about what it means to live in a world that is teeming with various types of life, a world she has created based on compassion, empathy, and a naturing instinct.

Piccinini challenges us to consider the technological world we live in and to investigate our relationships with other animals and ecosystems through sculpture, installation, collage, and film. Through this exhibition, she appeals to people to be more self-aware, kind, responsible, and accepting.

Piccinini’s fantastical tales of ancient and apocalyptic living forms are surprisingly similar to our current situation. She calls our attention to recent scientific advancements and climate change, both of which are altering our planet and way of life in numerous ways. As a result of natural selection, genetic engineering, and even artificial intelligence studies, species disappear while new ones emerge. Humankind, nature, and technology interact in fascinating and terrifying ways. Piccinini challenges us to envision a world in which kinships between humans and other creatures develop on a biological and existential level.

Patricia Piccinini’s presentation at ArtScience Museum is her first significant exhibition in Southeast Asia and features sculptures made between 2002 and 2018 as well as her most recent video, We Travel Together (2021), which is devoted to the tender relationship between a young Asian girl and a hybrid creature and explores themes like relationships, love, and beauty in a potential post-natural world.

Patricia Piccinini: We are Connected is accompanied by a number of readings, presentations, workshops, and programs that provide viewers a chance to engage with the artist’s work and philosophy.
