Deadline: February 11, 2025
The Holcim Foundation Awards 2025, a leading global competition for sustainable design, is nearing its February 11, 2025, 2 PM UTC deadline. The competition, organized by the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction, offers a USD 1 million prize pool and seeks projects that exemplify innovation in sustainability.
Eligibility and Submission Details
The competition is free to enter and open to projects of all scales. Eligible entries must be in the detailed design phase but not yet realized. However, projects already under construction may still apply, provided they are not completed before the deadline.
Entrants must submit their applications through a web-based form in English, including a sustainability summary, project design details, images, and technical drawings. The competition presents an opportunity for professionals in architecture and construction to gain international recognition for their contributions to sustainable design.
Awards Ceremony and Global Recognition
The Awards Ceremony is scheduled for November 20, 2025, at the Holcim Foundation Forum, coinciding with the Venice Biennale of Architecture. Winning teams will receive travel and accommodation to attend the event, where they will present their projects to an international audience of sustainable architecture and construction leaders.
Words with Winners: Insights from Past Awardees
Ahead of the 2025 competition, the Holcim Foundation has launched a short-film series, Words with Winners, which provides a closer look at previous award-winning projects. These films feature in-depth interviews with architects and designers, highlighting their design processes and sustainable innovations.
Among the featured projects is WOHA’s BRAC University Campus in Dhaka, Bangladesh, which integrates “breathing architecture” to create a healthier environment for 20,000 students. The campus is an example of architecture shaping urban development in a rapidly growing city.
Another highlighted project is the UCLA Margo Leavin Graduate Art Studios in Los Angeles, designed by Johnston Marklee. This adaptive reuse project showcases sustainable construction by preserving existing structures while introducing innovative design elements.
The series also includes the Cathédrale des Sports in France, designed by NP2F Architects. This multi-purpose facility emphasizes material efficiency and community integration, demonstrating how minimal resources can be used to create a functional and aesthetically cohesive space.
