The Bauhaus Dessau Foundation has been working on a digital atlas called Schools of Departure that compiles research on the global linkages between Bauhaus pedagogy and reform initiatives in art and design education during the 20th century. Schools of Departure suggests a dynamic constellation of instructional strategies rather than presuming the “impact” of the Bauhaus as a “centre” on a non-European “periphery.”
Users could browse through an initial selection of these educational projects in the beta version of the website, which was created by Offshore Studio and launched in April 2022. These educational projects were presented in condensed school portraits, picture essays, case studies, and film sequences. On Wednesday, November 16, 2022, the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation will publish the full version of the digital atlas at atlas.bauhaus-dessau.de
This version will feature two additional sections: Travelling Concepts, dedicated to a new e-journal, and an interactive section called Notes.
The launch will be accompanied by a public editorial meeting. The event will be conducted on-site at the Bauhaus Dessau Building and as a Zoom webinar. In collaboration with the Indonesian education collective Gudskul and curator Catherine Nichols, the e-first journal’s two issues concentrate on the global network of movements that sought a radical reform of the education of artists and designers and, in criticism of and dissociation from classical modernism, transformed schools once again into engines of social change. The current decolonization practices and their historical forebears in the field of design education thus form the core of the first issue. The second, The New Designer—Design as a Profession, focuses on the various pedagogical strategies used to educate the new profession of artist and designer that emerged after the First World War and the continued growth of this profession in close proximity to capitalist industrial production.
A third issue will be forthcoming in 2023.
Issue I: Decolonising Design Education >< Decolonising Education Design. Contributions by Asia Art Archive, Another Roadmap Africa Cluster, Babau AIR, Suchitra Balasubrahmanyan, Bishkek School of Contemporary Art, Load Na Dito, Pedro Oliveira, Omnikolektif, Nina Paim, Pangrok Sulap, Salikhain Kolektib, Serrum, Ola Uduku, Unconditionaldesign.
Issue II: The New Designer—Design as a Profession. Contributions by Yaa Addae, Claudia Banz, Shannan Clark, Alison J. Clarke, Martin Mäntele, Lesley-Ann Noel, Marina Otero Verzier, Klára Prešnajderová, Ilana Schleich Tschiptschin.
Users are encouraged to amend information, add their own research, and curate data using an interactive data visualization tool in the Notes section. Students, teachers, academics, curators, and Bauhaus researchers are the target audience for the digital atlas. The platform will be further developed in this regard within the scope of current and upcoming project and university collaborations of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.
The initiative, which was initiated in 2021, has since been developed as a part of the German Federal Cultural Foundation’s “dive in. Programme for digital Interactions,” which is supported by the federal government’s Commissioner for Culture and the Media through the NEUSTART KULTUR program.
