On the Brinck / Places Prize on the American Southwest
Call for proposals
Application deadline: August 30, 2024
Scholars interested in the American Southwest can now compete for a $7,500 prize to support public scholarship research. Inspired by landscape writer John Brinckerhoff Jackson’s focus on often overlooked aspects of the region, the On the Brinck / Places Prize aims to highlight new areas of study, challenge existing research, integrate allied disciplines, and engage a broad audience.
The prize, a collaboration between Places Journal and the On the Brinck program at the University of New Mexico’s School of Architecture + Planning, offers a $7,500 honorarium to the selected scholar. The winner will conduct research and write a major work for publication in Places Journal, as well as delivering a public lecture at the University of New Mexico.
The prize is open to both institutionally-affiliated and independent scholars. Applicants are encouraged to review Places Journal and its statement on Commitment to Public Scholarship before submitting proposals.
To apply, submit the following by August 30, 2024:
- Current CV
- Sample of published writing (ideally a public scholarship article)
- 500-word proposal outlining the prospective article
- Cover letter detailing the significance of the proposed topic, both within and beyond the Southwestern U.S.
Submissions should be emailed to [email protected] with “On the Brinck / Places Prize” in the subject line. For large files, use a file-sharing service.
For more information and detailed guidelines, visit Places Journal’s official website.
