November 18, 2023–March 24, 2024

The 13th Taipei Biennial, which will debut in November 2023, will be jointly organized by Taiwanese curator Freya Chou, writer, educator, and editor Brian Kuan Wood, and curator Reem Shadid, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM) is happy to announce. The curatorial team’s goal is to co-produce and co-create a curating process that emphasizes organic collaboration and will encourage the repetition and reproduction of knowledge and memory to give the Taipei Biennial new life.

A curator with offices in Taipei and Hong Kong, Freya Chou served as co-curator of the 10th Shanghai Biennial and was a member of the curatorial teams for the 6th and 7th Taipei Biennials (2008, 2010). (2014). She served as the organization’s first curator for the institution’s education and public program at the Para site in Hong Kong from 2015 to 2019. She served as the 59th Venice Biennale’s guest curator in 2022 and was a member of the 58th Carnegie International’s Curatorial Council (2022). New York-based author and editor of the monthly journal and book series for e-flux is Brian Kuan Wood. He has been the Director of Research at the School of Visual Arts in New York since 2015, where he also teaches in the MA Curatorial Practice program. Reem Shadid is a curator with a base in Beirut. She co-curated the Henie Onstad Kunstsenter New Visions 2023 triennial, and most recently, she oversaw the 12th Berlin Biennale’s curator’s workshop (2022). She is a contributing editor for Infrasonica and the creator and host of a radio program that explores the fusion of audio, visual, and literary products. She held a number of positions at the Sharjah Art Foundation, which oversees the Sharjah Biennial, from 2006 until 2020, including that of Deputy Director. The three curators will examine fresh connections and avenues for communication between Taiwan and the rest of the globe while jointly advancing the biennial’s evolution in light of their prior collaborations.

One of the oldest biennials in Asia, the Taipei Biennial has worked to advance Taiwanese contemporary art since its founding in 1998. Through its active participation in Asian and international contemporary art networks, which is informed by a variety of cultural perspectives, it has also provided a forum for interaction and exchange between local and international communities. The biennial has dynamically adjusted throughout the years and changed with the times in past editions. Experts and professionals from a variety of disciplines have been asked to participate in the biennial’s recent editions with the aim of igniting and introducing multiple art forms while fostering the vitality of numerous artistic dimensions.

The upcoming edition will be founded by an exhibition, a public music program, residencies, workshops, and various discursive and experiential forms, gradually generated and shaped in the ongoing collaborative and reciprocal process. The exhibition mechanism and methodology will serve as an entry point. The Taipei Biennial in 2023 examines how the demands of daily existence and survival tip the scales on a variety of highly effective modern devices, throwing their weights and measurements out of whack, and shattering stubbornly intimate cages in a still-expanding world.
