CONTACT ZONES— A collaborative exhibition effort between the Museum Angewandte Kunst and the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics is called Murat Adash, Céline Berger, Syowia Kyambi. The beginning point is the artist-in-residence program INHABIT, in which three guest artists from various artistic disciplines interact and converse with researchers from the research institute. The second installment of INHABIT, which is being presented by Murat Adash, Céline Berger, and Syowia Kyambi, features works the artists created during their residencies and in the context of the academic research facility.
Every resident edition is unique since it is a format without restrictions on subject matter, media used, or content. Instead, each residence edition is based on themes suggested by the visiting artists. The viewpoint of artists who approach the institution and the areas of research with curiosity and provide a variety of issues and initiatives is of considerable value for an institute dedicated to the exploration of aesthetics. Meetings, conversations, and collaboration are not the least characteristics of the artworks that express the various perspectives on the world of science. The approach to a diverse culture of knowledge, the difficulty of creating a dialogue between the creative and scientific fields, and the formulation of a common language as well as tying factors are all referenced in the title CONTACT ZONES. The phrase “contact zone” in cultural studies refers to social contexts where different cultures interact, clash, and struggle. But it refers to the area of interaction between art and science in the context of the residency program.
The artworks by Murat Adash, Céline Berger, and Syowia Kyambi all use the title CONTACT ZONES, but they do it in very different ways. Whether in Syowia Kyambi’s performative installations that retell historical (Western) narratives and intervene in areas of colonial activity, Céline Berger’s experimental film that examines the aesthetics of measuring and quantifying at the interface of bodies and devices, or Murat Adash’s performative practice, which deals with bodies and their spatial situation.
