Create the future.TransCultural Exchange’s Conference on International Opportunities in the Arts is returning to Boston after a six-year absence. The city will once more serve as the hub of the global art scene from November 4–6. Three full days of programming will bring together residency directors, curators, collectors, arts administrators, and critics from all around the world with artists (of all disciplines).
The conference will take into account the altered global environment of today. The globe has undergone a significant transformation since the Conference’s debut in 2019. The pandemic’s appearance, Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine, escalating conflict, and a global shortage of products have all increased the already urgent need to stop the spread of nationalism and other extremist impulses, racial injustice, post-colonial unfairness, and climatic instability. Like everyone else, artists are quickly adapting. Others make more oblique references to the human condition, while some artists choose to speak openly to these concerns in their work.
The purpose of this conference is to support the work of artists. It will address the expanding demands on artists who are working more cooperatively than ever before—often voluntarily including the public in activities and settings that were previously unimaginable, sometimes being embedded in other fields of inquiry, It will take non-canonical artistic traditions into account. It will discuss older trends and genres that are becoming more popular once again at the same time that NFTs have emerged. These are just a few of the numerous subjects that the Conference will cover. In addition, there will be expert professional development sessions to assist artists in locating the resources and expertise necessary to support their practices, practical workshops where they can interact with peers locally and globally, and numerous networking opportunities, roundtable discussions, and portfolio reviews with the Conference’s dozens of director of artist-in-residence programs, gallery owners, critics, and others on hand.
More than 180 renown speakers will be bringing their expertise to bear on the topics at hand, including Ute Meta Bauer (Singapore); Tania Bruguera (Cuba), Pieranna Calvachini (US); Luc Courchesne (Canada); Dorothea Fleiss (Romania/Germany); Fátima Martínez Gutierrez (Colombia); Irene Hediger (Switzerland); Hanna Isaksson (Sweden); Kassem Istanbouli (Lebanon); Mai Khoi (Vietnam); Helene Larsson Pousette (Sweden); Catherine Lee (Taiwan); Liudmyla Nychai (Ukraine); Bojana Panevska (the Netherlands); Joshua Pulman (US); Eva Respini (US); Omaid Sharifi (Afghanistan); Doris Sommer (US); Caitlin Strokosch (US); Shabani Ramadhan (Burundi), Sarah Tanguy (US); Alain Thibauld (Canada); Urbonas Studio (US/Lithuania); Gudrun Wallenböck (Austria); Jana Winderen (Norway); along with representatives from the ALIPH Foundation, Arquetopia Foundation (Mexico, Peru and Italy); Artist Residency Thailand; the Artist Communities Alliance; Artpace San Antonio; the Barr Foundation; the Center for Emerging Visual Artists; Centro Selva Arte y Ciencia (Peru); Ruth and Harold Chenven Foundation; China Residencies, Cross Cultural Collaborative (Ghana); Diaspora Vibe Gallery and Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator (the Caribbean); numerous Fab Labs, the Goethe Institut Boston (presenting a host of residency programs in Germany); Harvard’s Cultural Agents; Haystack Mountain School of Crafts; IASPIS (Sweden); the Lemelson-MIT Program; the MacDowell Foundation, MIT’s Arts Culture and Technology Program; PEN America’s Artist at Risk Program, 079 / Stories (India); the New York Foundation for the Arts; pARTage Artist-in-Residency Program (Mauritius); Silver Art Projects, the Surdna Foundation; the swiss-artists-in-labs program, the Taiwan Art Space Alliance; Tankwa Artscape (South Africa); TransArtists; and many others.
