The Graham Foundation’s objective to promote the creation and exchange of varied and challenging ideas about architecture and its role in the arts, culture, and society is fundamentally centered on assisting individuals. The Foundation’s initial grantmaking initiative was created to offer direct assistance to people.

Over 2,700 of the over 5,000 grants made by the Graham Foundation since its foundation in 1956 have gone to individuals, amounting to an investment of almost $20 million USD. Many people working in the field of architecture have benefited from such assistance, including renowned and up-and-coming architects, artists, curators, designers, filmmakers, scholars, and writers. In 1965, experimental architect Anne Tyng received a grant for her independent study of advanced geometry.

The Foundation’s grants offer crucial assistance to those conducting research, producing exhibits, publications, and other projects that engage contemporary architectural discourse as one of the few supporters of persons in the field of architecture. The Graham Foundation provides two types of grants to individuals through its annual open call, a two-stage application procedure: research and production + presentation grants.
