Paula Rego, a key member of the London Group movement and one of Britain’s most acclaimed artists, died in London after a brief illness. She was 87 years old at the time.

“Paula Rego died quietly this morning, after a brief illness, at home in North London, surrounded by her family,” her gallery Victoria Miro said in a statement. Nick, Cas, and Victoria Willing, as well as her grandkids and great-grandchildren, are in our thoughts and prayers.”

Rego is well known for being a founding member of the London Group, a radical group of British painters that includes David Hockney, Frank Bowling, and Frank Auerbach, which she joined in 1965.
