Seeking Director at Haute École des Arts du Rhin (HEAR)

Application deadline: August 31
Start date: June 1

Publicly funded Haute École des Arts du Rhin (HEAR) is a top-tier school of higher learning for the arts. It offers instruction in music and the visual arts, including contemporary art, graphic design, information design, illustration, textile design, scenography, and art and art objects made of glass, ceramics, books, jewelry, wood, and metalwork (composition and musical interpretation). At the graduate and post-graduate degree level, 750 students are enrolled across the school’s three sites in Strasbourg and Mulhouse.

Responsibilities

You will be in charge of the general management of the school as instructed by the Executive Board, working closely with the General Administrator, the Deputy Directors of Plastic Arts and Music, as well as the Chair and Members of the Executive Board.

Strategic management and implementation of the school’s Strategic Plan:

You will outline the strategic direction of the school and the methods for implementing and evaluating goals in the strategic plan. In addition to directing the Senior Leadership Team and overseeing six direct reports, your duties will include strategic management of the institution. Within the teaching, research, and pastoral departments, you will be in charge of directing how the strategic direction is put into practice. The workload for the Executive Board will also be organized by you. Planning income and expenses, anticipating developments, and contributing to the diversification of income streams are all responsibilities of the authorising officer. You will make sure that all departments operate properly and that their acts are always legal in your capacity as the institution’s legal representative.

Further develop the higher education of art:

You will oversee campus and cross-campus teaching departments as the institution’s academic leader, and you’ll plan for and encourage modifications to instructional strategies. Through the appropriate bodies or special agencies, you will be in charge of the institution’s quality and assessment policies. You will play a coordination role for cross-discipline and intercampus collaboration. By pursuing partnerships, resource sharing, and the synergies that are crucial within university and “grande école” relationships, your mandate will encompass the uptake and distinctiveness of training in Alsace and the Grand Est area. In connected academic networks, you will represent the school.

Contribute to the attractiveness and impact of the school:

You will be working to organize relationships in the areas of economic, social, academic, and cultural exchange at the regional, national, and international levels. In this regard, you will support long-term relationships and research advancement that are pertinent to global development and pressing concerns for the future (social, ecological transition, etc.). As part of long-term agreements or one-off projects, you will focus on establishing international and cross-border exchanges and collaborations. You will be knowledgeable with or have experience with art school research.

Recent developments

The design course at the Mulhouse campus and the Art and Communication courses at the Strasbourg campus (new master “Graphic languages”) have both undergone significant educational revisions as part of the ongoing development of Haute École des Arts du Rhin. A portion of the School will transfer to Strasbourg’s Manufacture des Tabacs (move planned for autumn 2023).
