Application deadline: August 11, 2022

The Photographers’ Gallery is looking for a superb applicant to join us as our Director and guide the Gallery in its upcoming phase. The Director, who will answer to the Board of Trustees, will be in charge of the organization’s strategic direction, including its general vision and its artistic initiatives. The Director will manage the continuous growth of our profitable commercial and fundraising activities, inspire our employees and audiences, and advocate for the Gallery and photography as a medium in the UK and beyond.

The Photographers’ Gallery is the premier venue in the UK for the display and study of photography in all of its forms and serves as a gathering place for photographers from across the world. The Gallery, which was established in 1971 in Covent Garden, London, has played a significant part in promoting photography’s important place in culture and society and securing its status as a preeminent art form through a dynamic and inspiring calendar of exhibitions, talks, events, workshops, courses, and other activities for anyone interested in photography and modern image culture.

This momentous occasion marks an extraordinary period of growth and creative evolution for the internationally acclaimed organization, which has showcased some of the world’s greatest photographers and led the debate about the networked image. It takes place against the backdrop of a successful 50th anniversary program in 2021 and the opening of Soho Photography Quarter in June 2022.

The ideal candidate will have in-depth knowledge of photography as a medium, experience with it, and knowledge of its ever-evolving and developing forms in the digital age. They will be deeply committed to the principles and culture of the Gallery, possess a healthy balance of creative and strategic mindsets, and have experience successfully interacting with a variety of audiences. Candidates should also have a global perspective and knowledge of public cultural organizations, both in the UK and internationally.

The Photographers’ Gallery is fervently committed to the huge advantages of a diverse workplace. We actively invite people to join us and shape and grow our working methods from a range of backgrounds and with a variety of experiences, abilities, and stories. We are especially interested in hearing from candidates from the global majority and candidates who self-identify as disabled.
