The 10th cycle of the Prix Pictet’s prize will have the theme “Human” as its focus.
The announcement was made at a presentation of Sally Mann’s work, the Prix Pictet winner, at the Théâtre Antique as part of the Les Rencontres d’Arles photography festival.
Isabelle von Ribbentrop, Executive Director of the Prix Pictet, spoke on the subject:
We rightfully praise human ingenuity, invention, and entrepreneurship, but far too frequently, our advancements in science, engineering, and technology have been incredibly expensive. More often than not, the story of humanity is one of struggle, anguish, and coexistence.
“It would be easy to read the human story as one of tragic hubris. Yet it does not end here. We stand on the threshold of the future wondering which way the dice will fall. Our wager with posterity is that human ingenuity, intelligence, and resilience of spirit is powerful enough to insist upon a very different future for the human story.”
Over the next few months, the more than 300 nominators in the Prix Pictet’s international network will find portfolios of work that fit the theme. The impartial Jury will once again assess these portfolios. The Rencontres d’Arles will host the presentation of the Human shortlist in July 2023. At the opening of the prize exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London in September 2023, the tenth laureate will be revealed.
