The Walker Art Center is looking for a dynamic curator to contribute to the visual arts program’s aesthetic brilliance and uphold the Walker’s purpose to create daring, ground-breaking programs and content that will be recognized by the public and the press. The person in this position actively fosters creative relationships with artists whose works further the Walker’s mission by conceptualizing and putting together timely and cutting-edge exhibitions that may tour across the country or around the world, artist residencies and commissions, published content, and interdisciplinary projects centered on contemporary art. The Curator is dedicated to commissioning and/or purchasing new works for the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden and Walker campus, as well as expanding the Walker’s world-class collection of contemporary art through acquisitions. The Curator routinely identifies and recommends purchases and gifts of art for the permanent collection. A variety of unique programs and initiatives, including fundraising and donor cultivation, depend on the Curator. The Senior Curator and Director of Visual Arts are the direct supervisors of this full-time position.
As a team member of the Walker’s Visual Arts department, you are dedicated to building our program and your work around the Walker’s values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and access. You also pledge to collaborate across departments on shared projects and objectives. You will bring in-depth understanding of the industry, contemporary art history, institutional best practices, as well as a track record of developing cutting-edge curatorial initiatives, publications, and research, to your role as curator. You are a creative exhibition maker who has collaborated with others to stage significant exhibition projects. Your curatorial perspective is inclusive and interdisciplinary. You contribute a wide network of artists and partners to the Walker’s exhibition program, collection development, and fundraising initiatives on a national and international scale.
To interact with artists, collectors, dealers, sponsors, community partners, and coworkers across departments successfully and genuinely, you must have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills. You have the ability to produce press releases, specialized/scholarly writings for readers, fundraising efforts, and accessible texts for a general audience. You are enthusiastic to take part in irregular evening and weekend gatherings as a representative of the Walker’s curatorial staff, to travel widely domestically and abroad, and to be active in the neighborhood’s arts scene.
