das weisse haus annual program 2022

das weisse haus is a multi-branch collaborative platform for contemporary art in Vienna, Austria, led by Alexandra Grausam. Since 2007, it is committed to supporting and presenting experimental artistic production through a locally anchored and internationally oriented program.

The 2022 program has been conceived by the new head of programming Frederike Sperling. Focusing on care, relationality and corporeality as lenses for collectively conjuring interdependent, more livable futures for the many, it hosts an intersectional spectrum of interdisciplinary positions. With performative exhibitions, performances, workshops, and discursive events, the program hosts different rhythms and intimacies.

The projects are curated by Frederike Sperling unless otherwise mentioned and variously expand onto dwhX, the new online platform by das weisse haus: dwhX.space.

March 30–May 21, 2022
“Genital( * )Panic” by Mary Maggic

Exercising technological and bodily disobedience, Mary Maggic occupies das weisse haus with the gynecology clinic “Genital( * )Panic”. Alongside public interventions and workshops with invited collaborators, it conducts research into the effects of environmental toxicity on sex and gender.

April 29–July 2, 2022
Callings from the deep with Caterina Gobbi, Ashley Holmes, Beate Gatschelhofer, Sophia Mairer, Sophia Süßmilch, Sofia Albina Novikoff Unger, Val Smets. Scenography by Ksenia Kovpak (Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna).

How to imagine futures when the present paralyzes our senses? Building on Mark Fisher’s “acid communism”, the exhibition dives into the underworlds of hallucination, trance-like states and surreal dreams. The artists foreground ecstasy and transcendental experiences as reminders that we are co-creators of more caring worlds—for humans and more-than-human beings.

September 20–November 24, 2022
Solo-exhibition by Corinna Helenelund

das weisse haus presents the first exhibition of the artist Corinna Helenelund in Austria. Stretching across sculpture and installation, her practice engages with somatic thinking, embodied time and the forms of “inner life”. The artist will present works from her series “The Backyard On The Seventh Floor” (2020) and a site-responsive sculpture.

November 2022–February 2023
and so on with Caroline Garcia, Rebeca Romero, agustine zegers, and more. In collaboration with Vienna Art Week. Curated by Kathy Cho.

New York-based curator Kathy Cho invites artists whose practices explore diasporic movement, loss, and subsequent immaterial labor. Investigating the potentials of melancholia and loss as sites for speculative futures, the show foregrounds the intimate and poetic sensibilities of each artist and considers each body of work as a living archive.

September 2022–2023
“Choreographies of Resistance” program series with Ashley Holmes, Veza Fernàndez, Oke Fijal, and more.

What is needed to reclaim our bodies from the claws of capital? How to disseminate vernacular understandings of promiscuous care and mutual support for bodies? How to path ways for more-than-human visions of corpo-realities? The long-term project “Choreographies of Resistance” stretches across various formats to collectively forge strategies of resilience for new corporeal realities.

dwhX
dwhX is a digital platform conceived by das weisse haus to critically reflect the entanglements between digital and analogue worlds. A hybrid organism with different velocities, dwhX features commissions, a networking project and garden section that cultivates critical discourse on art and digitality. Together with Kunstuniversität Linz, dwhX has launched a fellowship and a think tank on online studios.
