Open position: Curator at Bildmuseet—Contemporary Art and Visual Culture

Bildmuseet is looking for an exhibition curator for a permanent full-time role in Ume, Sweden. The deadline for applications is February 6, 2023. Employment begins on May 15, 2023, or as agreed upon.

Bildmuseet is one of the most important venues in Sweden for international contemporary art and visual culture. The shows are created in conjunction with artists, museums, and colleges all over the world, and they frequently garner national and international recognition.

Bildmuseet is part of Ume University, one of Sweden’s largest institutions of higher education, and is housed in an acclaimed building on the Ume Arts Campus, situated next to the Ume Academy of Fine Arts, Ume Institute of Design, Ume School of Architecture, and UmArts Research Centre. This is a multifaceted university where studies and research in the creative world form an important element of the foundation.

Description and work duties
Bildmuseet is a creative workplace of about twenty people. We co-direct the public exhibition and events program, which focuses on international contemporary art. We curate and produce high-quality exhibitions in conjunction with artists and art museums from across the world.

In collaboration with Bildmuseet’s director/artistic leader, you will conceive, organize, manage, and implement exhibitions, public programs, and projects as a curator at Bildmuseet. Project management, budget responsibilities, including seeking external funding, and the production of texts and publications are all part of the job. You will be in charge of creating and implementing public talks and events as part of the events program, in addition to exhibition production.

Qualification requirements
We are looking for candidates with a university degree in art history, curating, or a related field, as well as experience curating and project managing shows at one or more contemporary art organizations. You have an international profile and curatorial practice, as well as international networks related to the program at Bildmuseet. You are used to developing, running, and delivering exhibition projects on your own, and you have expertise handling finances and seeking external funding. You have great communication abilities in the subject of contemporary visual arts, and you communicate yourself well in both speech and writing. You have expertise communicating modern art to a wide range of audiences. A doctorate in art history, curatorial practice, or something similar will be considered.

Working to deadlines as a curator necessitates strong time management, adaptability, and the ability to plan and arrange your job properly. You will be able to demonstrate that you have the requisite cohesion and teamwork abilities for display production.
