Park City’s Longtime Reign Challenged as Sundance Seeks New Host

The Sundance Film Festival is on the brink of a significant change as it searches for a new home for the 2027 edition and beyond. After a rigorous review process, three cities have emerged as finalists: Boulder, Colorado; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Salt Lake City/Park City, Utah.

While Park City has been the festival’s longtime home, the Sundance Institute has decided to move the central headquarters to Salt Lake City. This decision comes amidst growing concerns from locals about the strain that the festival puts on the small town, particularly during the busy ski season. The influx of visitors overwhelms local businesses and public transportation, leading to frustration among residents.

The three finalists were selected based on various factors, including their ethos and equity values, infrastructure, and ability to host the festival. Additionally, the cities were evaluated on their commitment to fostering the diverse Sundance community and inspiring the next generation of independent filmmakers.

A long-term deal is expected, and key considerations include transportation, theater venues, hotels, and a welcoming community. Eugene Hernandez, Sundance festival director, expressed optimism about the three finalists, highlighting their potential to create a vibrant, inclusive, and inspiring festival.

Statements from the Finalist Cities:

  • Boulder, Colorado: Governor Jared Polis emphasized the state’s commitment to creative communities and the economic benefits they bring. He believes that the Sundance Film Festival would be a perfect fit for Colorado.
  • Cincinnati, Ohio: Mayor Aftab Pureval and Film Cincinnati president Kristen Schlotman highlighted the city’s dedication to the arts, hospitality, and historic theaters. They emphasized Cincinnati’s potential to create a memorable experience for both filmmakers and audiences.
  • Salt Lake City/Park City, Utah: The mayors of Salt Lake City, Park City, and Salt Lake County expressed their pride in supporting the Sundance Film Festival and their commitment to fostering a stronger bond with the festival. They highlighted the region’s infrastructure, venues, and hospitality as assets for hosting the event.

The Sundance Institute is expected to make a final decision in the first quarter of next year, following the 2025 edition of the festival. The choice of a new host city will mark a significant milestone for the festival and its future.
