Borås Konstmuseum presents Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg
Borås – Borås Konstmuseum presents Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg’s Only for the Wicked from June 10 to November 5, 2023.
Only for the Wicked by Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg is an exhibition set in the underworld, transporting us to a realm of winding mine tunnels and caves. Visitors are transported to a hidden treasure chamber and a continuing, meandering treasure quest through large-scale installations, sculptures, video works, and strong music. We are taken through dark, private tunnels where works of art, like valuable diamonds, appear at random intervals.
Djurberg and Berg are masters of creating ambiguous scenarios and atmospheres, transporting us between different emotions and states of mind, where what we see is twisted and deformed and continuously needs to be renegotiated. This occurs in their multi-layered and continuing narrative, as well as their extremely muscular soundscape. They depict complex behaviors with comedy and darkness, where pleasant situations of pleasure unexpectedly morph into revulsion and boundaries are continually shifted and transgressed.
Thematically, the pieces in the exhibition highlight how greed and the pursuit of money, fame, and power fundamentally affect a person, encouraging us to an obsessive, destructive spiral. They also reflect the hazards of excessive consumption and the depletion of common planetary resources, as well as the effects in a broader context.
