viennacontemporary 2022 opens in Kursalon Vienna

Austria’s premier contemporary art fair will be held on the grounds of the neo-renaissance palace Kursalon Vienna from September 8–11, 2022.

Austria’s premier contemporary art fair will debut there from September 8–11, 2022, amid the spectacular grounds of the city’s Kursalon Vienna, a Neo-Renaissance palace.

The Vienna Contemporary Admissions Committee and artistic director Boris Ondreika have individually invited national and international galleries, assuring exhibits of the greatest caliber as well as fascinating new discoveries. With special programs such as ZONE1, an exhibition of young artists living and working in Austria, Sessions, an extensive educational program with international experts and collectors, STATEMENT UKRAINE, a multi-part statement on what is unfolding in Ukraine and Europe, as well as guided tours, a concert, performances and film screenings around Kursalon Vienna, this year’s viennacontemporary promises to be one of the most exciting editions yet.

Program:

STATEMENT UKRAINE
From September 7, 2022

The main topic of viennacontemporary this year is a multi-part reflection on the state of affairs in Europe and Ukraine. The group show “The Cockerel with Black Wings: A Recovered Heirloom” at das weisse haus, in which Ukrainian and foreign artists address the current conflict, serves as the festival’s focal point.

Curator: Kateryna Filyuk. Thirteen international artists deal with the subject of war.

CRYPTO ART DROP

The project includes eight works of art made by well-known current Ukrainian artists in association with foreign crypto artists. The majority of the initial sales proceeds will be given to Ukrainian charitable groups.

ZONE1
Curator: Tjaša Pogačar. The exhibition format ZONE1 exclusively features artists under 40, who live, work or have been educated in Austria. Since 2015, ZONE1 has been one of the highlights of the fair, and is highly valued by art experts and visitors.

Guided tours
viennacontemporary invites its guests to dive deeper into the art world with the help of special tailor-made private and public guided tours. The times can be found in the schedule, tickets can be booked online or at the ticket counter.

Film
“How does art meet film? How does film meet art?” In cooperation with the Academy of Austrian Film, viennacontemporary is organizing a day at the Metro Cinema at the interface of art and film.

Kids workshop
Together with the ZOOM team, children and young people build their own works of art as part of viennacontemporary in the pavilion in the garden of Kursalon Vienna!

Sessions: Biergart’l
A series of afternoon lectures and workshops will cover themes such as art dealing, prices, collecting, and art production, and aims to engage with the realities of the art market. In cooperation with the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

New new media: MAK
In a series of three panels, international experts in the field of contemporary arts, architecture, design, and technology touch upon cutting-edge platforms, mechanisms, commodities of crypto, blockchain, and the virtual realities of art practice, production, and distribution. The seminar takes place in cooperation with and in the Lecture Hall of MAK.

Concert: Fennesz@Konserthaus
Austrian guitarist, composer, and electronic musician Christian Fennesz is considered one of the most distinctive voices in electronic music. As part of viennacontemporary 2022, Fennesz will perform in the historic Schubert Hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus.
