Sanja Iveković
Women’s House
November 14, 2024–January 12, 2025
The National Gallery of Kosovo presents Women’s House, a dual exhibition showcasing feminist pioneer Sanja Iveković’s impactful works. Curated by Hana Halilaj and Ivana Bago, the exhibition is split into two thematic explorations of Iveković’s art and activism. Meeting Points: Documents in the Making, 1968–1982 chronicles her artistic journey within the shifting political landscape of Yugoslavia, emphasizing her experimental approach to conceptual art. The second exhibition, Temporalities of Hope, explores Iveković’s critical examination of gender roles and media representation, shedding light on her continued activism against gender inequities and domestic violence.
The exhibitions highlight the artist’s extensive engagement with political realities, including her response to the erasure of women’s contributions to Yugoslavia’s anti-fascist history. The Women’s House series features plaster casts of women’s faces, produced in collaboration with survivors of domestic violence in Kosovo. These works amplify the continued fight for women’s rights and social justice. United under the common title Women’s House, the exhibitions transform the National Gallery into a space of dialogue across generations, addressing the complex realities of the post-Yugoslav space and beyond.
Curated collaboratively with Zagreb’s Museum of Contemporary Art, where one of the exhibitions originated, this show demonstrates the continued relevance of Iveković’s legacy in confronting past and present struggles.
