This publication is the result of a four-year collaboration between Hivos and Het Nieuwe Instituut. It is published by ArtEZ Press and edited by Leonardo Dellanoce, Amal Khalaf, Klaas Kuitenbrouwer, Nanjala Nyabola, Renée Roukens, Arthur Steiner and Mi You.
How does one handle today’s world’s quickly evolving digital geopolitics? How can the numerous social, political, cultural, and environmental effects of digital transformations in various parts of the world be understood? A broad mix of internationally recognized artists, scientists, and engineers from various backgrounds and locations are brought together in Vertical Atlas to share their thoughts. A wide range of topics are covered, including an investigation into the lithium mines in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, maps of the fiber-optic submarine cables in the Atlantic, algorithmic justice, cultural attitudes toward AI, the corporate vision of autonomous vehicles, Chinese ride-hailing platforms, and much more.
The Vertical Atlas is not a regular atlas that presents the world uniformly, nor is it a straightforward collection of conventional maps. With the help of newly commissioned diagrams, interviews, essays, and artistic creations by eminent specialists from around the world, it is a set of tools that enable comparisons, the seeing of linkages and conflicts between various and distinct viewpoints, realities, and universes.
