HAU hebbel am Ufer presents Spirits, Jinns & Avatars: On Magic in the Digital Age festival on March 2–12, 2023.

Where has the magical gone in this day of technology and societal transformation? What is the impact of the hybrid present on collective sensory experiences and rituals? Is it the apps and everyday technologies that hold the charm of the present?

Or has the annihilation of humanity via artificial intelligence become a more plausible possibility than the demise of capitalism? And what are the areas that postcolonial and anti-capitalist references to the magical can (re)open? In the face of a dysfunctional social system marked by ecological and economic exploitation, as well as the massive persistence of colonial structures into the present, the HAU festival Spirits, Jinns & Avatars sets out in search of (re)enchantment strategies spanning an arc between material and immaterial, analog and digital worlds, dance, performance, theatre, music, film, game, visual art, and net art. Magic and technology are not viewed as diametrically opposed, mutually repulsive poles, but rather as coexisting components of a present that must be altered using all available means for the sake of the future.
