The American Academy of Arts and Letters, located in Washington Heights, New York, is marking a significant milestone in its 125-year history by opening 10,000 square feet of its Beaux Arts–style galleries to the public year-round. This exciting new chapter for the institution will officially begin on September 26, 2024, with a fall season that celebrates contemporary art through a diverse range of solo exhibitions, original commissions, and interdisciplinary events. The launch of this expanded curatorial program is led by Chief Curator Jenny Jaskey and guided by a committee of Arts and Letters artist members, including renowned figures such as Mel Chin, Charles Gaines, Ann Hamilton, Joan Jonas, and Amy Sillman.

Contemporary Arts at the Forefront

The opening of the newly accessible galleries comes after a significant renovation to the historic Arts and Letters buildings, with more capital improvements planned over the next three years. Founded in 1898, Arts and Letters is a prestigious honor society that includes artists, architects, composers, and writers who are dedicated to fostering interest in the arts. The institution has been a cornerstone in the cultural fabric of New York City, and its new program aims to reflect the vibrancy and experimentation that defines contemporary art today.

The fall season offers a robust lineup of exhibitions and performances. Notably, four galleries in the institution’s South Building will be dedicated to a solo exhibition of works by Christine Kozlov, one of the pioneers of Conceptual art. Kozlov’s work, which emerged in the 1960s and 1970s, explored the intersection of language, perception, and memory, making her a key figure in the evolution of Conceptual art practices. This exhibition will provide visitors with a rare opportunity to engage with her significant yet often underrepresented contributions to the art world.

In the North Gallery, Raven Chacon, a contemporary artist and composer, will present a commissioned sound installation. Chacon is known for his experimental work that combines sound, performance, and installation, often drawing on his Diné (Navajo) heritage and exploring themes of Indigenous history and identity. Chacon’s sound installation promises to be a thought-provoking experience, immersing audiences in a dynamic auditory environment.

Special Events and Collaborations

Chacon’s exhibition will also serve as the backdrop for a unique collaboration between himself and his former mentor, legendary composer Wadada Leo Smith. On Saturday, September 28, during opening weekend, Smith will display his scores in the Hassam Gallery and perform in a joint concert with Chacon. Smith, an Arts and Letters member and celebrated figure in the world of avant-garde jazz and experimental music, has influenced generations of musicians, including Chacon. Their concert will be one of the highlights of the fall season, offering a rare chance to witness the creative dialogue between teacher and student unfold live.

Another highlight of the fall season is the premiere of a durational performance by Jonathan González, a choreographer whose work often interrogates power, identity, and the politics of space. González’s performance, set in the Arts and Letters library and members’ room, will take place in October, expanding the institution’s offerings to include contemporary dance and performance art.

A Broader Vision for the Future

As the institution embarks on this new chapter, it remains committed to its core mission of honoring and supporting creative individuals. Arts and Letters boasts a membership of 300 distinguished figures, including writers Hilton Als and Amy Tan, visual artists Cindy Sherman and Kara Walker, and composers Tania León and Pamela Z. Through its 70-plus annual awards and prizes, the institution continues to foster creativity and support innovation across a wide range of disciplines.

The expansion of public access to its galleries and the launch of a new curatorial program represent a bold step forward for Arts and Letters, positioning it as a key player in New York’s contemporary arts scene. This program aims to provide artists with the space, time, and resources needed to realize ambitious projects while also engaging the public through concerts, talks, and events. Visitors will have the opportunity to not only view exhibitions but also participate in a variety of programs that bridge the gap between art, architecture, music, and literature.

Community Engagement and Public Access

Arts and Letters will be open to the public Thursday through Sunday, from 12 to 6 pm, offering regular tours of its historic buildings on Audubon Terrace. The institution is also planning a series of public events throughout the year, ranging from artist talks to performances, aimed at fostering a deeper connection between the public and the arts.

The upcoming spring season will continue the momentum with solo exhibitions by photographer and filmmaker Elle Pérez and painter Teresa Baker, further showcasing the Academy’s commitment to a broad and inclusive vision of contemporary art.

For those interested in keeping up with the new program, signing up for the Arts and Letters mailing list via their official website is highly encouraged. This new era for the institution marks a transformative moment in its long history and promises to enrich the cultural life of New York for years to come.
