Julije Knifer
Meanders without bounds
September 5–October 12, 2024
The Art Encounters Foundation is proud to present Julije Knifer: Meanders without bounds, a groundbreaking exhibition featuring the works of the renowned Croatian painter Julije Knifer. This marks the first time Knifer’s art is exhibited in Romania, offering a rare opportunity to engage with the legacy of a pivotal figure in the Eastern European avant-garde. The exhibition, curated by Ami Barak, will run from September 5 to October 12, 2024, in Timisoara, with an opening event scheduled for Thursday, September 5, at 6 p.m.
Julije Knifer, born in Osijek, Croatia in 1924, and who passed away in Paris in 2004, is recognized as one of the 20th century’s most influential abstract artists. His work, rooted in minimalist aesthetics, is characterized by repetitive geometric meanders that explore profound concepts such as time, space, and repetition. These meandering forms have become emblematic of his career and offer a unique form of introspection to viewers.
Throughout his life, Knifer sought to push the boundaries of visual structure and minimalist art. His interest in stark black-and-white geometric shapes began during his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. His simple, yet powerful compositions reflect a deep concern for visual order and a rigorous approach to repetition and form reduction. These attributes brought him significant recognition within the international art community.
Knifer was a founding member of the Gorgona group, an avant-garde collective based in Zagreb that was active in the 1960s. The group was known for its nonconformist approach to art, promoting experimental and unconventional forms of creative expression. Knifer’s work, alongside his contributions to Gorgona, cemented his status as a key figure in the Eastern avant-garde movement.
Over the years, Knifer’s influence reached far beyond Croatia. His participation in the 2001 Venice Biennale brought his work to an international stage, and his 2014 retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb celebrated his lifelong contributions to abstract art. Knifer’s work has been exhibited in major institutions worldwide, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, MAMCO in Geneva, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, and is part of esteemed collections such as MoMA in New York, Tate Modern in London, and the National Gallery in Berlin.
The Meanders without bounds exhibition features a comprehensive collection of Knifer’s paintings and drawings, organized in collaboration with the artist’s estate. Visitors can explore his signature geometric meanders, which reduce form to its most minimal elements while engaging with complex ideas around the passage of time and spatial relationships.
Art Encounters Foundation, dedicated to advancing contemporary art and fostering cultural dialogue, continues to provide access to significant works that have shaped art history. By showcasing Knifer’s influential oeuvre, the foundation not only brings a key figure of the Eastern European avant-garde to Romanian audiences but also reaffirms its mission of uncovering and revitalizing forgotten aspects of art history.
The exhibition is open to the public from September 5 to October 12, 2024, from Tuesday to Saturday, between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. This is a must-see event for art enthusiasts, critics, students, and anyone interested in the evolution of abstract and minimalist art.
