The Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan invites submissions for fellowships in architectural research, design, and pedagogy.
Designers, practitioners, spatial activists and advocates, and scholars working on the interaction of race, ethnicity, gender, climate, and the built environment are especially encouraged to apply. National and international candidates whose work involves public engagement, those who have taken non-traditional routes into the study of architecture and the built environment, those who come from or are committed to serving underserved communities, and those who want to advance teaching and research practices that promote inclusion are all encouraged to apply.
Taubman College scholarships are among the oldest and most prestigious jobs of their kind. Fellows at Taubman develop their work and teaching in an intellectually diverse and dynamic academic environment made up of dedicated teachers and outstanding students from all around the world. Each fellowship involves coursework linked to the candidate’s area of interest, tools for work development, opportunities to interact with academics and researchers outside of the university context, and the ability to share the fellowship’s outcomes with the college. Fellows live in residence for two years, often teaching three classes in their first year and four in their second, while also working on their fellowship project. In the fall of the second year, the fellowship work (or alternate public distribution piece) is displayed. These fellowships are not designed to fund dissertation completion, post-doctoral stays, or to function as a pipeline for tenure-track employment at the school. While these are not post-doctoral fellowships (notice the teaching obligations and expectations of participation in studio instruction), we encourage submissions from recent PhD graduates who are passionate about design education.
