The Maine College of Art & Design (MECA&D) has announced the call for applications for its 2025 Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Studio Art program. The priority application deadline is February 23. This program provides an interdisciplinary, research-driven curriculum, allowing students to develop their artistic practice through critical analysis, mentorship, and creative exploration.

Program Structure and Approach

MECA&D’s six-term MFA curriculum integrates studio practice, independent research, and critical engagement. A key feature of the program is its one-on-one mentoring model, where students receive guidance from distinguished faculty, Visiting Artists, critics, and curators. The program fosters a supportive and dynamic learning environment, helping artists develop a sustainable and individualized creative vision.

Full and Low Residency Options

The MFA in Studio Art offers both Full Residency and Low Residency options, providing flexibility to accommodate different learning preferences and life circumstances:

Full Residency: Students have 24/7 access to private studios and fabrication facilities in Portland, Maine, working closely with faculty and peers in a collaborative environment.

Low Residency: One of the first programs of its kind in the U.S., this option combines intensive on-campus sessions with independent work from any location worldwide. Periodic group meetings throughout the two-year program facilitate research, travel, and dialogue among students.

Both options allow students to collaborate with renowned faculty, visiting artists, and carefully selected graduate advisors, ensuring mentorship and artistic growth regardless of residency choice.

Summer Intensive in Portland, Maine

All MFA students participate in an eight-week summer intensive in Portland, Maine, marking the first and fourth terms of the six-trimester program. This immersive experience brings together students, faculty, and Visiting Artists, who engage in public lectures, studio visits, and group discussions.

Application Process and Deadline
