The Art in the Age of the Metaverse conference will take place from March 10–12, 2023.

Art in the Age of the Metaverse is a conference aimed at exploring and critically reflecting on the function of art in the metaverse as a new cultural and social environment, as well as shaping its future direction more ethically and collaboratively. The metaverse is a shared environment at the intersection of the virtual and the real that is gaining popularity as a venue for artistic creation and experiences.

Confirmed speakers include Morehshin Allahyari, Black Swan, Ian Cheng, Barbara Cueto, Ali Eslami, The Hmm, Trevor McFedries, Micaela Mantegna, Moving Castle (Arthur Roeing Baer+GVN), Marina Otero Verzier, Chao Tayiana, Shuruq Tramontini, and Veronica So. Further confirmed participants will be continuously added to the website.

Art in the Age of the Metaverse brings together international artists, curators, activists, and industry experts working at the interface of the metaverse and contemporary art. The participants will share their experiences and address critical themes such as: What are the modalities of artistic expression at the intersection of physical and virtual? How do artists deal with ethical, social, and environmental issues? How do artists influence what the metaverse is and what it can become in the face of big tech? And what role do we, as participants, play in determining its future course?

Art in the Age of the Metaverse’s major purpose is to promote a more fair and involved vision of the metaverse. This includes taking into account concerns like decentralisation and inclusion, as well as addressing the environmental impact of the infrastructure required to support the metaverse and promoting sustainability and responsibility in its development and use.

In addition to these overarching topics, the conference will highlight the work of individual artists and collectives who use the metaverse as a medium for artistic expression. These artists are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the metaverse and challenging traditional concepts of space, time, and identity through their work.
