Berlin Art Week 2024
September 11–15, 2024
Berlin Art Week returns from September 11 to 15, 2024, offering art enthusiasts a dynamic exploration of the city’s diverse contemporary art scene. The 13th edition of this annual festival promises an extraordinary lineup, featuring over 70 exhibition openings, performances, and events spread across Berlin. The event will spotlight both established and emerging artists from around the world, making it one of the most anticipated cultural happenings in Germany.
A Diverse Artistic Showcase
This year’s Berlin Art Week will be held in various iconic locations throughout the city, including renowned museums, art institutions, private collections, project spaces, and numerous galleries. Among the featured artists are internationally acclaimed names such as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Pamela Rosenkranz, Santiago Sierra, Yoko Ono, Sigmar Polke, Alfredo Jaar, and Candida Höfer. These artists will present their works in a range of mediums, from visual art and photography to installations and multimedia projects.
Berlin Art Week’s program will also include several group exhibitions that delve into different themes and cultural narratives. Notable among these is the “Dream On—Berlin, the 90s” at Ostkreuz, which revisits the transformative decade in the city’s history, and “Forgive Us Our Trespasses” at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, which explores the intersection of art and societal guilt.
Unique Venues and Performances
In addition to the traditional gallery and museum spaces, Berlin Art Week will feature art in unconventional locations, inviting visitors to experience creativity in unexpected settings. Art lovers can immerse themselves in the raw industrial ambiance of a repurposed power plant at MaHalla, explore performances in an abandoned department store at Spoiler at Cank, or discover a modern art sanctuary at Reethaus, equipped with a 360° spatial sound system.
Live performances are another highlight of the event, with contributions from Göksu Kunak, Ewa Dziarnowska, Anan Fries, and Yvonne Rainer’s historic “Trio A,” among others. These performances will be staged in some of Berlin’s most iconic cultural spaces, including Sophiensæle, Hamburger Bahnhof, and Neue Nationalgalerie, further enhancing the festival’s multidisciplinary appeal.
Art Market and Gallery Night
Berlin Art Week also caters to collectors and art market enthusiasts with a series of special events. The Positions Berlin Art Fair at the former Tempelhof Airport will showcase a curated selection of contemporary art from over 50 of Berlin’s most prominent galleries. The festival week will also include Gallery Night by Gallery Weekend Berlin, where visitors can explore new exhibition spaces and discover young talents like Oliver Bak and Kayode Ojo.
Festival Center: BAW Garten at Gropius Bau
For the fourth year, the BAW Garten will serve as the festival’s hub at Gropius Bau, offering a daily changing open-air program with free admission. This vibrant space will host performances, workshops, and provide a relaxed atmosphere for visitors to enjoy snacks and after-work drinks while engaging with the art community.
