The 5th edition of the Beta Architecture Biennial, held in Timișoara, Romania, opened its doors to the public on September 13. Curated by Oana Stănescu, the biennial presents a comprehensive program of debates, exhibitions, guided tours, and artistic performances.
The main theme of this year’s biennial is “cover me softly,” which explores the concepts of originality and the subtle distinctions between copying, imitating, stealing, and covering. Stănescu invites architects, designers, musicians, artists, activists, photographers, writers, filmmakers, and those who defy categorization to participate in the exhibition.
Notable participants include US-based architects SO-IL, Space Popular, Tudor Vlăsceanu, and KOSMOS, photographers Laurian Ghinițoiu and Iwan Baan, and filmmaker Radu Jude.
Oana Stănescu, a renowned architect with studios in New York and Berlin, brings a wealth of experience to the curatorial role. Her work encompasses a diverse range of projects, from large-scale installations to infrastructure rehabilitation and community-focused initiatives.
Stănescu’s approach to architecture emphasizes its role in addressing societal issues and engaging in critical socio-cultural dialogue. She believes that architects should think beyond the confines of their profession and contribute to creating more equitable and sustainable cities.
