Open call for 2023 Concéntrico 09 international competitions

Submissions deadline: January 10, 11:59pm

Concéntrico 09 will take place from April 27 to May 2, 2023 in Logrono, Spain. Festival is open to submissions with a deadline of January 10, 11:59 pm.

Every year, the International Festival of Architecture and Design invites participants to reflect on the urban environment and metropolis. The Festival encourages people to explore the city through installations, exhibitions, discussions, and events that suggest new common uses, so enhancing the concept of community in public space.

The festival announces a call for proposals for three interventions in the festival’s ninth edition, as well as a call for participatory practices through the Cities Ahead program. The deadline for submitting proposals for the digitally delivered calls is January 10, 2023 at 23:59 hours (GMT+1):

The Pavilion in Plaza de Escuelas Trevijano serves as the starting point for excursions and events. A gathering space that demonstrates in a novel way how urban environments have become a crucial reference for coexistence.

In conjunction with Bodegas LAN, the installation in Viña Lanciano offers to work on the Mantible Ecológico plot, a vineyard of high landscape and ecological significance due to its unusual setting around an Ebro meander. A unique enclave not just for grape growing, but also for the coexistence of a diverse wildlife and riverbank flora.

Installation in Felipe VI Park, a public park with urban character and environment that follows the path of the railway tracks. It is intended to work on the west stand and its environs, which is one of the park’s points of attention and activity.

Concéntrico will be in charge of producing and building the winning proposals in collaboration with the teams chosen in the contests for Plaza Escuelas Trevijano, Via Lanciano, and Parque Felipe VI. These interventions will be part of a larger project that will take place throughout the city.

Since 2015, architects and designers such as Matali Crasset, Konstantin Grcic, Izaskun Chinchilla, Associates Architecture, Piovenefabi, Tudor Vlăsceanu, Germane Barnes, Rintala Eggertsson Architects, Lanza Atelier, Matteo Ghidoni – Enrico Dusi, Paradigma Ariadné, Aleksandra Wasilkowska, Palma + Hanghar, 44 flavours, Gregor Schneider, Iza Rutkowska, Storey Studio and Anna & Eugeni Bach have made interventions at the festival.

Cities Ahead: culture, creativity, community

Cities Ahead is a European initiative of the Goethe-Institut that encourages the revitalization of creative cities. Its goal is to convert the city into an ideal ecology for innovation and culture, utilizing all available opportunities for global dissemination and international cultural cooperation. Logroo, as the host city for Concéntrico – International Festival of Architecture and Design – will be a pioneer in Spain. Cities Ahead issues an open appeal to international creatives to suggest participatory acts for space transformation that incorporate aspects of sustainable development, urban innovation, and ecological transition.

This request attempts to put Logroo residents at the center of the city’s destiny. Logroo will become a laboratory for the innovation of new ideas, techniques, and formats through the implementation of a participatory artistic, activist, or other creative action. Three projects will be chosen from among those who have worked in public spaces and used a participatory method, involving citizens and/or the municipality in their work.

The event is organized by the Cultural Foundation of the Architects of La Rioja in partnership with Javier Pea Ibáez, the initiative’s promoter, and the Logroo City Council and the Government of La Rioja. Garnica, Bodegas LAN, and over 30 local, regional, national, and international institutions, corporations, and businesses support it.
